Bewdley were under no illusions when they took the field for their very first league game, in North Midlands Division 3, against Birchfield. Birchfield were relegated from the North
Midlands Division two last season so Bewdley could not have had a harder start ending the game with a 54 7 defeat.
Birchfield started the stronger team and overwhelmed Bewdley in the pack scoring two unanswered tries, one of which was converted. Bewdley then had a stint of pressure but Birchfield hit
back with a penalty. Bewdley grew in confidence and for the second week the Freeman brothers in the centre of the park were outstanding. Andy freeman had the try line beckoning but dropped the ball at the vital
moment. Steve Freeman was unlucky not to add to his previous games try, but the ball never bounced kindly to him all day.
In the second half Birchfield rattled up more tries but Bewdley did not drop their heads showing they will not roll over for anyone. A grub kick from Tony Banks seemed to be well covered
but the Birchfield defence let the ball slip and Martin Saunders pounced for the try, which John Tidmarsh converted.
Birchfield then scored three more tries to put the gloss on a good days work. Bewdley showed character and rallied to the end with big hits coming from the player/coach Chris Lewis. This
was a stern test for Bewdley who showed great spirit for such a young team.
