Bewdley opened this season's campaign with a friendly match with Bromsgrove Vets. Both teams started well. Bewdley's pace out wide was counteracted with Bromsgrove's big men in midfield.

Bewdley kept Bromsgrove under constant pressure in the first half with outstanding position kicking from their fly half Tony Banks. Bewdley had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock with a penalty within kicking distant but were disappointed to see the kick sail wide of the posts. Bromsgrove were first to score after a midfield mistake led to a try in the corner. Bewdley were quick to hit back when an up-and-under was caught by Steve Freeman who slipped a timely pass to Martin Saunders to score under the posts from the half way line. Brendan Bentley added the conversion to see Bewdley lead at the interval.

The second half saw Bromsgrove gradually claw their way back into the game using their experience. This pressure proved too much for Bewdley who had no answer to the big midfield hits. This led to Bromsgrove scoring four tries in quick succession after Bewdley made many substitutions. Bewdley, however, did not lie down and when Chris Lewis made a vital challenge the ball spilled loose to Steve Freeman who sprinted thirty yards to score. Bromsgrove hit back again in the dying seconds to flatter the score line.
